ea. vol: 47p. photogs. reprods. chron. index. (World at War Series). CIP. Childrens. June 1985. PLB $7.45. Gr 4-6 The scope of these two books is very limitedeach one gives a brief overview of one facet of the war, and this elementary format does not permit more than a superficial coverage of the topic. Yet the large print and numerous photos will be inviting to younger readers who are eager to begin reading about World War II (although the vocabulary is somewhat more advanced than the format would indicate). The black-and-white photographs, which average at least one per page, do not always correlate with the text but do add to the overall context. The quality of some of the photos is poor, perhaps because they have been reproduced from various other sources; others are quite clear. In Warsaw Ghetto, photos are, by necessity, grim and brutal. Quotes from original sources are good, but other text and captions are more emotional than factual: ``these homeless ghetto children may have been among the thousands who died. . . .'' These titles are not intended to be definitive works, but they will serve as introductions for beginning history buffs. Eldon Younce, Harper Elementary School, Kans.
